Driessens & Verstappen are fascinated by the idea that all the faces of all the people who have ever lived and will ever live, may be found within the enormous quantity of grains of sand existing on earth. And even although finding a face is very rare, you know that innumerable faces are concealed among them. If you search long enough in the well nigh inexhaustible quantity of grains. Pareidolia* is a fully automatic robotic search engine scrutinizing grains of sand in situ. This proceeds as follows: there is a dosing funnel in the machine that sprinkles the sand across a slowly rotating glass disc. The microscope above the disc detects the individual sand particles and applies face detection software to each of them. If a face is discovered within the scattered grains, a portrait will be recorded photographically. Finally, there is a swiper swiping the sand away that has traversed round the circuit, so making space for new grains. In addition to the optics and the mechanics of the robot installation, the artists have developed the face detection software themselves, whereby they utilize AI and artificial neural networks.
The artists keep tally of the top 100: as more grains are evaluated, this top 100 comprises increasingly better faces. The top 100 are shown on a large screen and its rounded form refers to the ocular nature of the microscope.

The work offers a profounder insight into the morphology of sand grains and the inconceivable number of their unique variants. In addition, the work comments in a playful and absurdist manner on the extreme implementation of an anthropocentric worldview, whereby everything revolves around Man who wishes to see his own image even in the tiniest grain of sand.

Driessens & Verstappen zijn gefascineerd door het idee dat alle gezichten van alle mensen die ooit geleefd hebben en ooit zullen leven, te vinden zijn in de enorme hoeveelheid zandkorrels die er op aarde bestaat. En ook al is het vinden van een gezicht zeer zeldzaam, je weet dat er ontelbare gezichten tussen verborgen zitten. Als je maar lang genoeg zoekt in de schier onuitputtelijke hoeveelheid korrels. Pareidolia* is een volautomatische robot-zoekmachine die zandkorrels ter plekke onderzoekt. Dat gaat als volgt: in de machine bevindt zich een doseertrechter die het zand op een langzaam ronddraaiende glazen schijf strooit. De microscoop boven de schijf detecteert de afzonderlijke zanddeeltjes en past op elk van hen gezichtsherkenningssoftware toe. Als een gezicht wordt ontdekt in de uitgestrooide korrels, wordt het portret fotografisch vastgelegd. Tenslotte is er een wissertje dat het zand, dat de ronde heeft afgelegd, wegveegt en zo plaats maakt voor nieuwe korrels. Naast de optica en de mechanica van de robotinstallatie, hebben de kunstenaars zelf de gezichtsherkenningssoftware ontwikkeld, waarbij ze gebruik maken van AI en kunstmatige neurale netwerken.
De kunstenaars houden een top 100 bij: naarmate er meer korrels geëvalueerd zijn bevat deze top 100 steeds betere gezichten. De top 100 wordt getoond op een groot scherm en de afgeronde vorm verwijst naar het oculaire karakter van

Het werk biedt verdieping in de morfologie van zandkorrels en het onvoorstelbaar aantal unieke varianten ervan. Daarnaast geeft het werk op speelse en absurdistische wijze commentaar op een ver doorgevoerde antropocentrisch wereldbeeld, waar alles om de mens draait die zelfs in de allernietigste zandkorrel zijn evenbeeld wil zien.
