Membrane
Membrane is developed for Pleinmuseum (a mobile exhibition pavilion that pops up in another
city each time). For every evening during one week one artwork is shown from a total of 7 different artists.
The construction of the pavilion itself - an unfolding, aluminum frame with projection screen stretched
over it - formed the starting point for Membrane. A computer model of the pavilion is created.
First a virtual frame with a virtual canvas stretched over it is made and than a dynamic motion
generator to let the membrane change and transform. Sometimes these movements resemble recognizable wave
patterns like crumples, wrinkles, etc. But also new unfamiliar forms can arise, that emerge from the
software in relation to the specific shape of the pavilion. Subsequently the computer generated images
are projected on the pavilion (via 8 synchronised projectors) and by doing so the concrete space and the
illusionairy space will converge: a contemporary "trompe l'oeil".
Real sounds of membranes (plastic bag, towel, canvas, etc.) form the basis of the accompanying sound
composition. Likewise the changeable structure and texture of Membrane, these basic sounds
are subject to changes such as filtering, stretching and compression. The actions of the basic sounds are
accentuated with atmospheric sounds. They connect the separate actions and they give direction over a
longer time span. Somebody who is nearby Pleinmuseum might not see the pavilion yet, but one could
become attracted to the sound and follow it to its source.
