E-volved Cultures

E-volved Cultures is an installation in which an artificial "landscape" grows in real time. The dynamic pixel-landscape is generated by eight virtual agents which leave visual traces in interaction with their environment. The colourful abstract animations arouse associations with landscapes, geological processes, cloud formations, fungal growth, organ tissues or satellite photos, but ultimately they still avoid any definitive identification.

The pixel grid forms the environment, the habitat, of eight artificial unicellular, pixel-sized agents. They are simple autonomous machines which operate according to a built-in program. The agents are able to change the colour of the pixel they stand on, and move to a neighbouring pixel. Behaviour is dependent on neighboring colors and the mutual attraction or repulsion of the agents. At the beginning of the process the screen is monochrome grey, the software doesn't use any photographic imagery as input. During each successive time step all the agents execute their program; they change their environment by leaving visible traces in their habitat. Innumerable scenarios for interaction and emergence are possible because the traces of one agent can influence the behaviour of other agents. The collective activity of all the agents in the habitat forms an artificial ecosystem, developing gradually in time. The behaviour of the individual agents as well as the behaviour of the group as a whole, are developed with the E-volver software. This interactive software applies artificial genetics and evolutionary techniques to explore the huge space of possibilities for interesting phenomena. The process of artificial evolution is controlled similar to the natural process of variation and selection. Each breeding process begins with a "primordial soup", a stage in which the agents usually generate an incoherent tangle of moving lines, points and coloured planes. On the basis of personal preferences of the software user, the selection process gradually evolves a group of agents that contains properties that collectively generate intriguing, coherent images.

Similar concepts and techniques are used in the interactive artwork E-volver in assignment of the LUMC Leiden and SKOR Amsterdam.
