Plastomorph
Plastomorph (2023) is inspired by the growth process of coral. The work speculates about a distant future where species transmute and gradually adapt to the “plastic soup” in our oceans. Through an evolutionary twist of fate, these species are able to process microplastics into building materials. That's why their skelettons are not white - as we are used to seeing coral - but multicoloured.
The forms are not designed but “bred” within a custom-written generative computer program. A colony of agents builds the sculpture particle by particle, reacting to each other's traces. Through an artificial evolutionary process of selection, crossover, and mutation, only the most fascinating growth forms have been preserved. The colours reflect the history of creation: each particle carries the information of its own age and type within it. The structures that they collectively build are then 3D-printed in synthetic coloured plastic.
