Tuboid is a computer program that uses artificial evolution to generate tube-like forms. The tube is created by
joining together segments, each having a slightly different shape at each turn. The segments are generated by an internal
drawing mechanism.
During the creation of each new segment, form mutation and form selection takes
place. But not every result will be accepted because there is one important criterion that all segments have to satisfy:
the circumference of the drawing may not self-intersect. Therefore the software uses an evolutionary component to create the
new segments. Every mutation is tested against this "fitness" criterion, only valid settings will be selected. The tubular
membrane that arises in this way can be perceived in two ways, as a space or as a sculpture. With the interactive
Tuboid projection you can make a virtual journey through the interior, the
Tuboid sculptures show the three-dimensional external form.
