Fossil Remains
The bluestone tombstone floor of the Saint Laurens Church (Grote Kerk) in Alkmaar contains ancient fossils of corals, sponges and shells. Driessens & Verstappen were inspired by these fossils and with the project Fossil Remains (2024) they cast a speculative glance into the distant future.
The site specific installation connects the fossils of the past with those of the future: Through a scavenger hunt visitors learn more about the fossils in the church floor. On the high choir, visitors are taken into a hypothetical scenario about the ultimate destination of our plastic waste, in the form of 14 new tombstones.
